Dr Markos Klonizakis

Markos is a Research Fellow in the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science of Sheffield Hallam University. He has a medical engineering and vascular physiology background, with his current research interests being concentrated on the role of lifestyle interventions in the prevention and treatment of vascular diseases. He is the Chief Investigator of the study, being responsible for all study aspects and its day-to-day management.         

Garry Tew

garry-tewAs a Research Fellow in the York Trials Unit in the University of York, Garry currently co-ordinates randomised controlled trials in the fields of exercise rehabilitation, pharmacological therapy and orthopaedic surgery. Garry’s background is in exercise science and clinical physiology and his main research interest is in the role of exercise in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Garry is a Co-Investigator for the FISCU study, with a main role of overseeing the delivery of the exercise programme.   

Geoff Middleton

Geoff Middleton (2)Geoff is a Senior Lecturer with the University of Lincoln, with research interests in exercise, nutrition and health promotion. Geoff has worked on projects which have investigated the effects of exercise and/or diet involving physiological assessments and interventions. He is the Principal Investigator of the study in Lincoln and will be responsible for the delivery of the exercise intervention at this study site.

Sue Kesterton

Sue is an Exercise Science Officer at Sheffield Hallam University & Sue 2has over 13 years’ experience as a health practitioner. She is a REPS Advanced Exercise Instructor, specialising in Cardiac & Cancer exercise rehabilitation, Associate Lecturer and trained in Advanced Motivational Interviewing. Her main research interest is in public health and healthy lifestyle choices in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. Sue’s role on the FISCU study is to provide physiological health & fitness assessments with participants to measure the impact of the research intervention.  

Emma McIntosh

Emma pic 1Emma is a Research Assistant on the FISCU study. Her background is in health and exercise science, having previously been involved in exercise interventions in the areas of cardiac rehabilitation and mental health. Emma is responsible for the recruitment and administration aspects of the FISCU study and she will be delivering the exercise intervention at Sheffield Hallam University.

Dr Anil Gumber

Anil is Principal Health Economist with specialisation in quantitative research at the Centre for Health and Social Care Research (CHSCR), Sheffield Hallam University. He has been involved in internationally-acclaimed clinical trials in the areas of diabetes, whiplash injury and cancer, having also conducted comprehensive quantitative reviews on health and wellbeing by ethnicity. Anil is a Co-Investigator in the FISCU study, with a main role of undertaking economic and statistical analyses of the exercise intervention, being also responsible for the development of the randomisation sequence.

Dr Helen Crank

Helen is a Principal Research Fellow at the Centre for Sports and Exercise Science in Sheffield Hallam University. She has an expertise in Quality of Life assessments, and oversees the delivery and analysis of the qualitative study aspects.

Professor Jonathan Michaels

Jonathan is a retired vascular surgeon and an Honorary Professor of Clinical Decision Science at the University of Sheffield. He is currently involved with a number of research projects related to technology appraisal and decision science, leading an NIHR Programme Grant looking at The Design, Development, Commissioning and Evaluation of Patient Focused Vascular Services. He is supporting the study with regards to methodological aspects, providing clinical input and advising on patient recruitment and retainment.
